A new interventional radiology suite with the latest technology was recently added at Waterbury Hospital making less invasive, very sophisticated procedures, including for treatment of liver cancer and prostate conditions, available for patients close to home.

“Technology like the new IR suite bring the type of sophistication found in major healthcare centers to Waterbury. We have the talent in our medical staff and the quality of care to provide patients with almost every procedure they need,” said Waterbury HEALTH President and CEO Dr. Justin Lundbye.

Patients will soon have access to procedures including:

Chemoembolization of liver malignancies – This is a minimally invasive process of directly infusing chemotherapy into liver tumors through a catheter in the artery. This highly targeted treatment allows for high concentration of chemotherapy within the tumors while minimizing damage to the surrounding liver and also limiting side effects associated with the medication.

Prostate embolization for severe benign prostatic hypertrophy – a minimally invasive procedure that shrinks enlarged prostate glands by blocking the blood flow to the gland.

“These state-of-the-art procedures are in addition to other sophisticated procedures we already offered patients including uterine fibroid embolization, tumor microwave ablation and more,” said Dr. Duncan Belcher, radiologist.

Besides technology, the hospital has added expertise with the addition of Dr. Ryan Duggan to the medical staff, an interventional radiologist trained in the latest technology at Yale New Haven Health, where he completed a fellowship in interventional radiology. He joined Diagnostic Radiology Associates this summer and will be working at Waterbury Hospital.

The interventional radiology procedures are the latest in sophisticated procedures offered at Waterbury Hospital. Last year Waterbury Hospital added a hybrid operating suite which allows Waterbury Hospital doctors to perform trans aortic valve replacement, a procedure during which heart valves are replaced without open heart surgery.

The hospital offers a wide range of robotic surgery including colorectal and orthopedic. Later in the year, Waterbury Hospital is expected to add to its neurosurgery procedures.

Waterbury Hospital is home to four major centers of excellence: Cardiology, Orthopedic, Surgical Innovation, and Family Birthing. Waterbury Hospital was ranked a high performing hospital for patients suffering from kidney failure, heart failure and stroke by the U.S. News & World Report 2022-2023 Best Hospital edition.
