Waterbury Hospital to Begin Pollen Count for the Season

Daily count to continue through September

WATERBURY- Waterbury Hospital will begin its daily pollen count on May 3rd. The daily pollen count is performed by the Waterbury Hospital Hematology Laboratory and sponsored by the Center for Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. The data is made available to the public daily during the workweek, and the pollen count will run through September.

Waterbury Hospital has the only Pollen Count center in New England that is certified by the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology’s National Allergy Bureau. The pollen count report is compiled every weekday. Scientists from the Waterbury Hospital Hematology Laboratory collect and report pollen data on: trees, grass and weeds pollen and as well as mold spores. Measurements are per cubic meter.

Waterbury Hospital has the only Pollen Count center in New England that is certified by the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology’s National Allergy Bureau.

Pollen and spore data are collected over a 24-hour period. Data presented at “Today’s Pollen Count” actually reflects some data from the day before. Waterbury Hospital’s Hematology Laboratory has been collecting daily pollen data for decades. The Pollen Count runs through September.

The pollen count report is compiled every weekday by the Waterbury Hospital Hematology Laboratory and is sponsored by the Center for Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Scientists from the Waterbury Hospital Hematology Laboratory collect and report pollen data on: trees, grass and weeds pollen and as well as mold spores. Measurements are per cubic meter and ranges are as follows:

Range for trees: LOW = 0-15, MOD = 16-90 HIGH = 91-1500, VERY HIGH = >1500

Range for grass: LOW = 0-5, MOD = 6-20, HIGH = 21-200, VERY HIGH = >200

Range for weeds: LOW = 0-10, MOD = 11-50, HIGH = 51-500, VERY HIGH = >500

Range for molds: LOW = 0-900, MOD = 901-2500, HIGH = 2501-25,000, VERY HIGH = >25,000
