I Was Diagnosed with Osteoporosis: What do I do next?

By Anna Ziganshina, MD

A diagnosis of osteoporosis can be scary and overwhelming especially because oftentimes osteoporosis is diagnosed following a bone break and emergency room visit or following surgery.

After healing form a break it’s important to continue regular medical care. Some of the things I recommend to patients include:

  • Regular Bone density tests: These tests monitor disease progression and overall health of your bones.
  • Take your medication as prescribed. Bisphosphonates or other prescribed treatments may help strengthen bones.
  • An endocrinologist can help you manage your disease. If you already have a relationship with an endocrinologist, this is great. Other specialists include a dietitian, physiotherapist, depending on what your needs are.

But living with osteoporosis is more than just regular tests and medications. Living healthily with osteoporosis involves a combination of lifestyle changes, nutrition, physical activity, and reducing the risk of fractures. Here are some things I recommend to my patients:

Nutrition

  • Eat Calcium-rich foods including dairy products, leafy greens, almonds, tofu, and fortified foods.
  • Don’t forget Vitamin D. Vitamin D helps absorb calcium. You can get it from sunlight, fortified foods, or supplements.
  • Eat more protein: Protein is essential for bone health. You can get protein from sources such as lean meats, legumes, and nuts.
  • Limit caffeine and alcohol: Excess amounts can weaken bones.

Exercise daily

  • Weight-bearing exercises: Walking, dancing, or stair climbing helps maintain bone density.
  • Strength training: Builds muscle and supports bones.
  • Balance and flexibility: Yoga or tai chi can reduce fall risk.

Prevent falls

Here are some of the things you can do to prevent falls:

  • Use non-slip mats at home
  • Use good lighting and handrails
  • Wear supportive shoes.

An osteoporosis diagnosis can be lifechanging. Many of the changes I recommend here are good advice for overall health. Staying healthy is the key to living your best life, no matter your age or diagnosis.
